What is the origin of PET glass film?

Glass film serves to enhance the safety and energy efficiency of standard glass. The use of glass film dates back to the 1960s when its initial purpose was to address the imbalance in heating and cooling caused by solar energy loads. In its early stages, these films primarily focused on reflecting solar radiation away from glass windows to prevent excessive heat buildup on the inner glass surfaces.
As manufacturing technology advanced, a new generation of body-colored insulation films emerged. These films offered a wide array of colors, providing architects with extensive design possibilities. Some of the prominent color options include brown, gray, gold, amber, blue, green, among others.

The energy crisis in the United States in 1970 spurred further developments in film performance, particularly in reducing indoor heat loss, a concept often referred to as "insulation." Research revealed that polyester film not only served as a transparent medium but also exhibited the capacity to absorb and re-radiate long-wave infrared rays. Subsequent experimentation led to significant changes in film materials and structures, resulting in the production of "low-emissivity film" or LOWE film, known for its enhanced thermal insulation properties.

The fundamental composition of this film includes a polyester substrate (PET) coated with an anti-scratch layer (SR) on one side, while the other side features an adhesive layer for installation and a protective film. During installation, the protective film is removed, and the adhesive side is applied to the inner glass surface. For films designed for external applications, they are affixed to the outer glass surface.

PET is a remarkably durable material known for its strength, resilience, moisture resistance, and excellent performance across a wide temperature range. It maintains transparency and undergoes various processes such as body dyeing, metallization coating, magnetron sputtering, and sandwich synthesis to create films with diverse physical properties. These films cater to various applications in commercial buildings, residences, storefronts, bank counters, vehicles, ships, and more.
Architectural glass films are primarily categorized into two series: building energy-saving films and safety films. Key varieties encompass body dyeing films, heat-reflective insulation films, low-reflection insulation films, high-transmittance magnetron sputtering films, low-radiation (LOW-E) films, specialized films for museums and archives, frosted and translucent decorative films, transparent safety films, and others. These films excel in four core attributes: heat insulation and energy efficiency, UV resistance, aesthetic appeal and comfort, as well as safety and blast resistance. In the construction industry, glass films serve as versatile solutions suitable for both renovating existing structures and enhancing new ones.
